Battery sales in Germany: Battery sales in Germany increase due to demand for electric cars

New Delhi: Growth in Germany’s battery sector doubled to 35% last year, driven by demand for lithium-ion batteries for electric cars, data showed Wednesday.

“Sales, especially of lithium-ion batteries, have increased tremendously,” said Christian Eckert of ZVEI electronics industry, during a call with reporters.

Global battery market revenue in 2020 was € 5.9 billion (€ 1.09 billion), with the lithium-ion segment growing 63% to € 3 billion .

Lithium-ion batteries are also used in medical equipment, smartphones, power tools, and electric bicycles.

ZVEI said most lithium-ion cells are imported from Asia to Germany. In German, they are then made into final battery products in a complete production line. Apart from domestic uses, they are also re-exported to European and international markets.

But imports of cells from European countries such as Poland were also increasing, ZVEI noted.

Demand for the second largest segment, lead-acid batteries, fell 26% to € 740 million. It came as the manufacturing of combustion engines and forklifts sank into the coronavirus crisis, which dampened industrial activity and demand.

The automotive industry, for example, uses lead-acid batteries to power on-board systems, while they are also used in emergency medical care and data centers.

Volkswagen, the world’s second-largest automaker, said on Tuesday it was essential to contain access to raw materials and the costs of battery cells for electric vehicles, which besides lithium include graphite, cobalt and nickel. , in order to exercise more control over key components.

He drew up plans to build six battery factories across Europe until 2030 with partners.
