End of the first beach volleyball tour on the island of Negros

MJ Ebro and Honey Grace Cordero of Uswag Ilonggo 1 and Erjane Magdato and Jennifer Cosas of Madekind Naturals emerged as co-champions in the women’s category *photo BVR

The winners of the inaugural Negros Island Beach Volleyball Tour held in San Carlos City were awarded right after championship games at the San Julio Realty Grounds on July 31.

Of the 22 matches of the previous elimination, the 4 best teams qualified for the final stages of the championship.

In the men’s category, Rancel Varga and Dominique Gabito of Asian Volleyballista, undefeated in four matches during the tournament, became champions while James Buytrago and Pol Salvador of National University (NU) Boysen 1 settled in 2nd place after Buytrago suffered severe cramps and was unable to play in the title match.

Philip Sugaton and Peter Sugaton of Negros Occidental Beach Volley Club (NOVBC) settled for 3rd place when they failed to catch Varga and Gabito on a score line of 21-7, 21-11.

Meanwhile, in the women’s category, the thrilling duel between MJ Ebro and Honey Grace Cordero of Uswag Ilonggo 1 and Erjane Magdato and Jennifer Cosas of Madekind Naturals in the third set was cut short due to darkness and both teams became co-champions with scores tied. at 8-8.

The winners received 30,000 pesos which they will also share. Both teams will await another episode of the Negros Island Beach Volleyball Tour to determine who will reign as the ultimate champion while Uswag Ilonggo 2’s Gelimae Villanueva and Kyla Gallego complete the podium with third place.

The champion teams each received 20,000 pesos while the first and second runners-up received 10,000 and 5,000 pesos respectively.

Other participating teams include those from San Carlos City, Talisay City, Himamaylan City, Municipality of Pontevedra, Higad-Visayas, Gapusan Gille, Biogenic 1&2, University of Negros Occidental-Recoletos (UNO-R), Colegio De Sta Ana De Victorias ( CSA-V), Grass to Bone, M-Studio Magallanes and Powered Recovery.

Bea Tan, founder of the Beach Volleyball Republic (BVR) and organizer of the Negros Island Beach Volleyball (NIBV) Tour – San Carlos, said hosting the event will help find potential players and boost the sport of beach volleyball.

Tan added that one of the reasons they chose the city as their venue was its strategic location, close to the key cities of Cebu, Bacolod and Dumaguete.

San Carlos City Mayor Renato Gustilo said he looks forward to the city hosting more sporting events like this as it is known as a sporting paradise, especially in soccer. Three plan to hold the beach volleyball event again during the town festival in November this year.

Councilor Philip Gerard Maisog and local sports defender Gerardo Valmayor III led the awards ceremony.
