Local and international stakeholders are due to meet in Abuja from November 15-16 to discuss how modernizing railways can contribute to the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement (AfCFTA).

In a statement signed by Olayemi John-Mensah, Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), Head of Media/Strategy for the organizers in Abuja, the event has been moved from August to November following requests from international actors wishing to participate in an event.

The themed conference, “Propelling the AfCFTA with Sustainable Rail Development” is organized by the Federal Department of Transport in partnership with the National Chamber Policy Center and African Railway Consulting Limited.

The conference must also reflect on accelerated rail connectivity to meet the demands of the African Continental Free Trade Area with major issues such as attracting needed finance, the imperative of continental rail standardization and the urgency of closer collaboration between economic blocks in the railway development process.

The high level event which would attract CEOs of continental development banks, donor partners, ministers of transport in and outside Africa, potential investors, investment financiers, railway consortia, manufacturers of rolling stock, leasing companies, among others, would be a real platform to showcase investment opportunities, especially in the context of Africa’s focus on rail connectivity to boost the free zone.
