For the fourth year in a row, Reno achieved a perfect score on the Municipal Equality Index (IEM) of the Human Rights Campaign.

In total, 506 cities across the country were assessed. 94 cities, including Reno, got a perfect score.

“We certainly deserved to have a score as high as we did because the city is committed to making us an inclusive place for all citizens,” said Devon Reese, the first open member homosexual from the Reno city council.

Reese honored National coming out day October 11 by unveiling permanent rainbow trails at Idlewild Park. The art item was created months after city officials unveiled a temporary rainbow crosswalk under the arch of Reno.

The MEI examines municipal laws, policies and services that affect the LGBTQ + community. Cities are ranked based on non-discrimination laws, municipality as employer, municipal departments, law enforcement, and LGBTQ + equality leadership, according to the Human Rights Campaign.

Other notable actions that helped the city achieve the perfect score include:

  • Establish designated LGBTQ liaisons within the Reno Human Resources and Police Department
  • Expand health care benefits that include transgender people
  • Conceive a Diversity, Equality and Inclusion Committee to help make the City of Reno a more inclusive place to work
  • Partnership on a sale of Reno Pride t-shirts with our center with 100% of the profits going to our center
  • Have a pride parade

“Our City Council will continue to protect and promote the personal dignity of all residents, businesses and visitors to Reno by removing discriminatory barriers in the community that could prevent individuals from reaching their full potential,” said the Mayor of Reno , Hillary Schieve, in a prepared press release. “I am extremely proud that our city continues to set the standard for inclusion.
