Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality in South Africa’s Eastern Cape is reporting the death of a five-year-old Reeston child from rabies following a dog bite.
In addition, two other cases are under investigation.
The municipality is undertaking a vaccination campaign to vaccinate dogs in various parts of the metro and the government is urging the public to have their pets vaccinated.
This is a joint initiative with the Ministry of Agriculture and Agrarian Reform (Veterinary Services) in collaboration with municipal health services, disaster management and public participation of the metro.
The municipality is calling on residents to take note of a rabies outbreak and signs in dogs and other pets that include aggression, bites and drooling.
