The counting of votes for the elections in the 138 municipalities of Tamil Nadu will take place on Tuesday. Votes will be counted at 268 centers across the state.
On Saturday, a vote was held to elect representatives in more than 12,500 wards in 21 corporations, 138 municipalities and 489 city panchayats.
According to the state election commission, 60.7% of the votes were cast in the elections. Among the municipalities, Dharmapuri recorded the highest number of polled votes at 81.37%.
Elections for urban local bodies in Tamil Nadu took place after a hiatus of more than a decade. In the last urban and rural body election held in 2011, the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam emerged victorious. Political parties that are in the fray in 2022 include Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, Opposition AIADMK, BJP, Congress, Makkal Needhi Maiam, Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazagam, Naam Tamilar Katchi and Pattali Makkal Katchi.
Although the term of elected members ended in 2016, elections have been postponed several times. Legal concerns were expressed by various parties. These ranged from lack of time to prepare to law and order issues.
Prior to the counting of votes, the state election commission advised that nearly 1,700 state-owned TASMAC liquor stores will remain closed on counting day.
